Earth's clouds got a little lower -- about one percent on average -- during the first decade of this century, finds a new NASA-funded university study based on NASA satellite data. The results have potential implications for future global climate.

Kåkbrinken is the name of this small street in Stockholm Old Town (Gamla stan). The name is first attested in 1477. 'Brink' is not a word really used today, but mostly survives in names. It means a short slope. 'Kåk' is used today, it is slang for 'house' - and Kåken ('the kåk') actually means prison. But that was not what it meant back in the 15th century, then it meant pillory. This street was named after the pillory found on the square at one end of this street. But it is safe to say that most Swedes today would not know that is the case! (I myself, and I've studied history, found out when I read up on the name.)

Romagnano al Monte is a ghost town with a bleak melancholy. Time remained crystallized on November 23, 1980, the date of the devastating earthquake that struck like a merciless ax on Southern Italy. At the entrance of the town there are buildings with modern architecture, built in the seventies, which clash with the ancient houses of the village. This helps to accentuate the estrangement effect, amplifying the echo of uneasiness. Several buildings have collapsed or crumbling, but it is still possible to find faint traces of the life of the past: kitchens furnished with chairs and tables, old newspaper clippings, rusty cans. The visit to the Church of the Madonna del Rosario, dating back to the 17th century, is impressive and moving to say the least. The building is striking for its magnetic beauty that contrasts with the surrounding desolation, made of rubble and collapsed beams.

With a little green in between. This is on the dam that separates the eastern and western basins of the Ismaninger Speichersee, with the western basin visible to the left.

The Ismaninger Speichersee is a reservoir in the north of Munich, built in 1929 to regulate the water flow for the run-of-the-river power plants along the Isar Canal.

The reservoir and the adjacent fish ponds are a nature reserve (Europareservat) and an Important Bird Area (IBA).

This is the lake Veslevatnet in Norway. I deserve a pat on the back for being able to actually locate where this shot was taken - since it is in the middle of nowhere where we were taken a short rest on our way.

I also deserve a pat on the back for being able to translate the name. It means "the small/little water". For a Swede, Norwegian isn't always easy (some of the time, yes, but not this). Vesle in Norwegian means small. Vessla in Swedish means weasel. So it hard to guess if a word just is a spelt a bit differently OR mean something completely different. As in this case. (Yes, I looked it up.) By the way, the Norwegian word for weasel is snømus ("snow mouse" - which is an utterly adorable name).

The Genoveva Castle of Mayen is one of the most important sights of the city in the eastern volcanic Eifel. The castle houses the "Eifelmuseum".

In the summer, the well-known theatrical performances take place under the name Mayener Burgfestspiele on a free-standing stage in the courtyard of the castle.

Yesterday morning, we woke to freezing fog. Cold... but Marnie had to have her walk, and here we are by our local pond. The sun was just breaking through to illuminate the scene. I hope you like it as much as I do. Best viewed large -- you can see the little blocks of ice resting on the surface of more ice. Must admit, I was cold all day after this outing ! 😃

Many thanks for taking a look and perhaps imagining being there with us. You are all deeply appreciated. Hope you don't get frostbite or, if you're in our southern hemisphere, sunburn or dreadful rainfall and floods. Hang on in there, everything passes, everything changes.

The sunrise that appeared on the morning I spent on the backwaters of Kerala was in pastel faint colors! The lake was peaceful as the light fell on the water lily pads and the reflections of the clouds.

You know I like to do sunrises, unfortunately there was not a decent one all the time I was in Iceland. This was the closest I got. I do like the range of blue tones tinted by the pinks.
